Alan Kay – Winner Season 1 Alone – History Channel

Come meet Season 1 winner of History Channel’s Alone, Alan Kay.

Alan was born and raised in Georgia, where he spent the majority of his childhood in the forests making shelters with his beloved hatchet. His passion for the woods grew as the years passed, and by the time he was in his 20s, Alan had acquired the skills and mindset necessary to adapt and survive in any environment. In an effort to increase his understanding of edible and medicinal plants, Alan sought out and studied under a number of knowledgeable elders, who helped to round out his growing skill set. He also spent time developing proficiency in the combative arts, including barehanded, stick, and knife fighting.

Alan is a seven-year veteran of law enforcement and has also been trained in tactical medical care. In 2015, Alan was able to survive for 56 days on Vancouver Island alone and unsupported. For the past 15 years, Alan has taught survival, preparedness, and self-defense skills. Empowering others with the skills necessary for true self-reliance is his passion. Alan can be reached through www.alankaysurvival.com or https://www.facebook.com/alankaysurvival.

Nicole Apelian –  History Channel Alone Season 2

Nicole is a scientist, mother, educator, researcher, expeditionary leader, safari guide, herbalist and survival skills instructor. Most recently Nicole spent 2 months living Alone on Vancouver Island self-documenting her experience for the History Channel.

Nicole’s first exposure to true wilderness living began while working as a field biologist in Botswana. Following a job as a game warden with the US Peace Corps, she began tracking and researching lions in southern Africa. Nicole immediately fell in love with the African landscapes and the San Bushmen’s way of life, and later, while working with the San Bushmen, Nicole completed her doctorate, focused in Cultural Anthropology within the field of Sustainability Education. Years of visiting the San Bushmen and developing strong relationships within the tribe allowed Nicole to learn many of the primitive skills and ways she practices and teaches today.

A diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 2000 led Nicole to apply her research skills towards her own personal wellness. She developed a healthy living strategy, focusing on health and wholeness. Through simple changes in her lifestyle and eating habits, Nicole restored her vitality and she moved on to become a founder and primary guide for her own tracking and wildlife safari company, Eco Tours International (www.ecotoursinternational.com).

Nicole continues her work with the San Bushmen to help them find strategies to preserve their traditions and also teaches wilderness living skills, prepping and herbal medicine fulltime all across the United States and Canada. She can be reached through her website at www.nicoleapelian.com or https://www.facebook.com/nicoleapeliansurvival/.

Salvador Alvarenga  –  Survived at sea for 438 days!

Jose Salvador Alvarenga is an El Salvadorian who was working as a shark fisherman in Costa Azul, Mexico on November 17, 2012.  He and a local 20 something year old local named Ezequiel Córdoba set out on an overnight fishing trip about 100 miles off shore.  Salvador’s 24 foot fiberglass boat had no cabin, one outboard motor, and minimal supplies.  A storm quickly overtook them and they had to ditch their fishing nets to race back to shore.  On the way back the motor died, their GPS got wet and shorted out, and Salvador was able to make one radio call for help before the battery died.  Rescuers were unable to find them as they began to drift westward.  The two survived on catching fish, birds, and sea turtles by hand and drinking turtle blood and collecting rainwater when possible to quench their thirst.  After a few months, Córdoba refused to eat and died.  Now alone, Salvador devised creative ways to maintain his sanity and find more food and water.  His long and amazing ordeal is retold in the book 438 Days which is the number of days he was adrift before finally washing ashore and being rescued on a small atoll in the Marshall Islands.

While Salvador’s story was at first doubted by many, it was eventually verified by oceanic experts, a polygraph examination, and other evidence that he did indeed make the 6,000 mile journey as he described.  He attributes a large part of his incredible determination and resilience to his faith in God.  Salvador will retell the details of his incredible journey and the survival skills he used to live over 14 months, longer than any documented person adrift at sea.

David and his wife Jill will be hosting our “Dig In” Survival Food Eating Competition.  Join David as a competitor in “Dig In”.  Roadkill, mice, crickets, and other things you might not eat unless you had to… or if you wanted to win prizes of course!

Jeff Anderson – Survival & Modern Combat Instructor

As a lifelong student of what he calls “survival arts”, it was Jeff Anderson’s military training that led him to seek out strategies that would protect not only himself on the battlefield… but also provide for his family’s own self-reliance in any sort of disaster, crisis, or collapse.

After 10 years of military training in elite infantry units around the world, Jeff began working as a security consultant and executive protection specialist for private clients and the entertainment industry. Specializing in military style hand-to-hand and weapons combat, Jeff offered classes and seminars based on practicality and battlefield effectiveness!

In Jeff’s survival training, it was his service overseas and in combat missions, that he was able to get a first-hand glimpse of what a city gripped in collapse and without rule of law is like for its citizens. He uses his unique experience to inject a more realistic view of what to expect in survival scenarios and provide practical solutions – even in extreme environments – for true survivalists.

Ultimately his training and experience led him to create the digital media channel for Modern Combat And Survival magazine which is fueled by more than 100 of the world’s top instructors in law enforcement, military, and civilian survival schools.

A.R. Shaw – Author – Authors of the Apocalypse

A. R. Shaw was born in south Texas and served in the United States Air Force Reserves from 1987 through 1991 as a Communications Radio Operator, at the Military Auxiliary Radio System (MARS Station) at Kelly AFB, Texas.

Her first novel, The China Pandemic, (2013) climbed to #1 in Dystopian and Post-Apocalyptic genres in May of 2014. Hailed as “eerily plausible” and her characters “amazingly detailed,” Shaw continues the engaging series in post-apocalyptic (SHTF) fiction.

She was stunned by the love of her fans for the fictional dog, Sheriff, from the Graham’s Resolution series, who now has his own Facebook Page run by fans titled Sheriff’s K-9 Squad Room. It’s a page to share all things regarding police dogs. She’s been repeatedly warned, by the fans, never to consider axing the dog; the children are fair game, but the dog stays. Perhaps that’s a tribute to her unique ability to write stories that make readers really care about the characters she develops.

A. R. Shaw lives in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. You can contact A. R. Shaw directly at her website at (AuthorARShaw.com)

Annie Berdel – Author – Authors of the Apocalypse

Based in Indianapolis, Annie Berdel is a self proclaimed advocate of educating women in the art of personal protection and self reliance.

As an aspiring writer, Annie took her advocacy and dove into the dystopia genre with strong female lead characters.

A passion for firearms, herbal medicine, knives, slingshots, home canning, Kali street fighting, Kempo karate and furry animals fuels the fire and adds countless stories to be told beginning with her inaugural book “Alpha Farm, The Beginning”.

Boyd Craven – Author – Authors of the Apocalypse

Boyd Craven has penned over 20 books over the last two years, only recently deciding to take the plunge into publishing. His “The World Burns” Series has hit the top 10 in the Dystopian Genre in the USA, the UK, Canada and Australia. Boyd has made his home in Michigan with his wonderful wife and about a million kids, but travels to Texas to visit family as frequently as possible.

He hunts and goes fishing when he’s not dreaming up post-apocalyptic nightmares to put his characters through. Fear not though, Boyd is a huge believer that in the darkest hour, there is always a glimmer of hope to hold onto.

Boyd has been experimenting with living off the grid – an excellent way to research for his series, as well as torture his teenage sons.

Prepare yourself by reading his books – they’re a thrill ride, on or off the grid.
