Nicole Apelian –  History Channel Alone Season 2

Nicole is a scientist, mother, educator, researcher, expeditionary leader, safari guide, herbalist and survival skills instructor. Most recently Nicole spent 2 months living Alone on Vancouver Island self-documenting her experience for the History Channel.

Nicole’s first exposure to true wilderness living began while working as a field biologist in Botswana. Following a job as a game warden with the US Peace Corps, she began tracking and researching lions in southern Africa. Nicole immediately fell in love with the African landscapes and the San Bushmen’s way of life, and later, while working with the San Bushmen, Nicole completed her doctorate, focused in Cultural Anthropology within the field of Sustainability Education. Years of visiting the San Bushmen and developing strong relationships within the tribe allowed Nicole to learn many of the primitive skills and ways she practices and teaches today.

A diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 2000 led Nicole to apply her research skills towards her own personal wellness. She developed a healthy living strategy, focusing on health and wholeness. Through simple changes in her lifestyle and eating habits, Nicole restored her vitality and she moved on to become a founder and primary guide for her own tracking and wildlife safari company, Eco Tours International (

Nicole continues her work with the San Bushmen to help them find strategies to preserve their traditions and also teaches wilderness living skills, prepping and herbal medicine fulltime all across the United States and Canada. She can be reached through her website at or

Salvador Alvarenga  –  Survived at sea for 438 days!

Jose Salvador Alvarenga is an El Salvadorian who was working as a shark fisherman in Costa Azul, Mexico on November 17, 2012.  He and a local 20 something year old local named Ezequiel Córdoba set out on an overnight fishing trip about 100 miles off shore.  Salvador’s 24 foot fiberglass boat had no cabin, one outboard motor, and minimal supplies.  A storm quickly overtook them and they had to ditch their fishing nets to race back to shore.  On the way back the motor died, their GPS got wet and shorted out, and Salvador was able to make one radio call for help before the battery died.  Rescuers were unable to find them as they began to drift westward.  The two survived on catching fish, birds, and sea turtles by hand and drinking turtle blood and collecting rainwater when possible to quench their thirst.  After a few months, Córdoba refused to eat and died.  Now alone, Salvador devised creative ways to maintain his sanity and find more food and water.  His long and amazing ordeal is retold in the book 438 Days which is the number of days he was adrift before finally washing ashore and being rescued on a small atoll in the Marshall Islands.

While Salvador’s story was at first doubted by many, it was eventually verified by oceanic experts, a polygraph examination, and other evidence that he did indeed make the 6,000 mile journey as he described.  He attributes a large part of his incredible determination and resilience to his faith in God.  Salvador will retell the details of his incredible journey and the survival skills he used to live over 14 months, longer than any documented person adrift at sea.
